World Metrology Day celebrates “Measurements in daily life”

Annual global event highlights why measurement matters in everyday life

Everett, Wash., May 20, 2013 – On May 20th, scientists and organizations dedicated to metrology celebrate World Metrology Day, which commemorates the signing of the international treaty to coordinate weights and measures activities and support the development of the metric system. Fluke Corporation recognizes World Metrology Day as a time to appreciate the scientists in national laboratories throughout the world who dedicate their lives to improving everyone’s measurements.

The theme for World Metrology Day 2013 is “Measurements in daily life.”

Metrology, the science of measurement, is the basis for most other technologies, yet many people don’t understand its impact on everyday life. Measurement standards support free trade by providing consistency in measurement when we buy and sell. It sets standards for industrial safety. It guarantees interoperability of products and technologies through global standards. And it enables consistency and quality in the products we rely on.

“Like the national laboratories, Fluke is dedicated to improving measurements in daily life,” said Fluke Chief Corporate Metrologist Jeff Gust. “We do this by designing and manufacturing rugged, reliable, and accurate measuring tools and instruments. Although Fluke manufactures many different types of products for a wide variety of applications, all of our products help to ensure that people feel confident about the measurements they make.”

Watch Jeff Gust’s keynote presentation on why measurement matters and how it affects our daily lives.

For example, many workers in the food service industry verify that proper cooking temperatures are maintained using a Fluke FoodPro Plus Infrared Food Thermometer, which accurately measures food temperature without making contact, thereby mitigating contamination risks during measurements.

“We have a unique ability to make certain that every-day Fluke products, such as food thermometers, provide correct and accurate results, because we also build the world’s most accurate commercially available calibrators and standards for electrical, pressure, and temperature measurements,” Gust said. “These instruments are used in national laboratories throughout the world and often serve as a country’s national reference standard for a given measurement.”
