Product overview: Fluke 820-2 LED Stroboscope

Investigate and observe potential mechanism failure with confidence

Identifying the running speed of rotating equipment can be difficult, but the Fluke 820-2 LED Stroboscope simplifies the process allowing you to perform stop motion diagnostics without actually stopping, or making contact, with the machine you are working on. Whether you are trying to diagnose parasitic oscillations, slippage, or unwanted distortions, the 820-2 LED Stroboscope is the ideal frontline troubleshooting, process or product research and development tool.

Other useful features:

  • Includes digital pulse width modulation for exceptionally sharp images at high speeds
  • Provides rugged, durable design that uses solid-state LEDs with no filaments, gases, hollow cavities, or glass; (1 meter drop tested)
  • Features quartz-accuracy control system for high accuracy–0.02% (+/- 1 digit)
  • Provides a multi-line LCD display
  • Includes advance or retard flash timing for viewing gear teeth, cutting surfaces, repeats, or drifting equipment
  • Features simple push button operation with 2x and ÷2 buttons for easy adjustment

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Size Good, Speed Adjustment Bad, Durability OK If you are looking for something to inspect an elastomer coupling, a chain, or a drive belt while the equipment is running and you already know the speed, there is nothing better to have in your pocket. It does a great job in that respect to PM inspections of running equipment. And I'm pretty happy with it after about 3-4 years of use. The biggest plus about this strobe light is the size... nothing else comes close. It's also a easy non bulky way to check direction of rotation on a motor that is already running. Dial the RPM in, and then lower it down by about 5 RPM's and whatever direction the motor fan or shaft appears to be turning in is the actual direction of rotation. The biggest detractor is that using the +/- buttons to zero in on the RPM is very frustrating. The rate of speed change increases as you hold the button in longer and is like an exponential increase. If you need to move more than 100 fpms, forget it... you are going to overshoot or undershoot the speed you are trying to get. The user settings should have included something that limits or adjusts the rate of change with the +/- buttons. If I wanted to increase the speed as fast as it would go, I would have used the 2x multiplier buttons with a few clicks--there is just no need for the +/- buttons to move the FPM's so quickly. This makes it very hard for some people to zero in on the correct FPM and I see many instances where someone thinks that the equipment was running at a 3x multiple of what it actually was and that never was a problem with the old fashioned strobe lights with the knob. I'd say that the durability isn't the best given the battery holder as a weak point. A mechanic broke the first one within 6 months. by dropping it which damaged the battery terminal "spring" (for lack of a better term) which subsequently broke off when trying to bend it back in place. I got it working again with some aluminum foil and had to order a 2nd strobe as backup. Everything else seems to be holding up good though. The cost is a bit high, but I figure what you are paying for is the convenience factor of the size. And as we all know, convenience, or lack there of us a strong indication of whether someone is actually going to want to use it without a lot of motivation.
